Grocery Store Survival Guide

Shop for groceries around the perimeter of the store. The centre aisles contain all the processed foods; if you (or your kids) don't see the junk food, you'll be less tempted to purchase it.

Get the kids involved. Allow your kids to have some control over family mealtime by letting them help make the grocery list. While shopping, put them in charge of buying only what's on the list; hopefully, this will keep them on task and avoid any temptations at the store. Too young to read/write?
Let pre-readers draw items or cut and paste
photos from old magazines and flyers.

Avoid tantrums by:

  • Setting expactations before you get to the store. For instance, let children know at home that there will be no treats, but allow another choice such as which fruit to buy.
  • Ensuring children are not too tired or too hungry.
  • Keeping young children occupied. Bring small toys or books or engage children with in-store activities (see above or visit Winning Ways to Grocery Shop with Young Children ).
